A Santee woman is celebrating after winning $100 million in the California State Quick Pick Lottery Thursday night. Charlotte Keys, 34, claimed her prize on Friday morning in La Jolla.
“I was so excited I could not believe it,” Keys said, reflecting on her reaction. “It was pure excitement, like when I got my first dog. Pure shock.” She may be a long way from her hometown of Goldsboro, North Carolina, but she still plans on investing in her childhood dream.
As a child, she often went with her mother to the laundry mat. The whole establishment was always filthy. Ever since, she has wanted to own a stylish laundry mat in Beverly Hills. She would like a coffee shop inside and an apartment on top for her and her husband to live in. “I ain’t low class,” Keys said, and her laundry mat won’t be low class either. She remains positive and does not wish to think about her laundry mat closing. Just in case, however, she plans to put some of her money into savings.
The 7-Eleven Slurpee Specialist heard the news from a coworker. She buys five quick picks every week. The managers were pleased to have the first ticket winner in their store as an employee. She has worked for 7-Eleven since she came to California 10 years ago. She takes pride in her work and is so far unsure whether she will resign.
For the Keys family, this couldn’t have come at a better time. Keys’ husband is currently unemployed after losing his job as a garbage man. She is holding off on telling him until he finds a job. “I might share,” she said jokingly. As for the rest of her family, Keys said, “They have always been leeches, so I won’t feel bad turning [their requests for money] down.”
When asked if she planned to donate money to a charity, she responded, “Hell no! No one donated any money to my organization, that’s for sure!”
She is very excited to be able to pay the bills and not have the credit card company calling her. “I can answer the phone again,” said Keys happily.
The winning numbers were 5, 45, 16, 11, 16, and 9.
